Dota 2 and Then Some

Exactly year ago, I wrote about IceFrog’s involvement with game producer Valve and speculated on its ramifications. True enough, Valve recently announced a sequel to our beloved game, Dota Allstars. Dota 2 is essentially a remake of Dota 1 (ok I just made that name up), with its characters, items, skills and maps remaining untouched.

The path leading to Dota 2 has not been the most harmonious. Last July 23, 2010, one of Dota’s creators, Steve Mescon aka Pendragon, posted a lengthy message explaining his falling out with IceFrog. IceFrog didn’t want to commercialize as what Pendragon claimed, which led the former to create his own community on Playdota.com and basically taking everyone from Dota-allstars.com with him. Dota-allstars.com has since closed down. The question of “commercializing” will inevitably be brought up again now that IceFrog is coming out with a spiffy new *cough* commercial game. And let it be known that IceFrog got paid to work on the Dota clone, Heroes of Newerth, behind Pendragon’s back. One can only wonder why IceFrog’s entry into Valve didn’t get, well, the nicest of receptions. This blog post made by a Valve employee exposed his alleged scheming behavior, and his real name, Abdul Ismail. The same accusations was echoed to me by someone who worked closely on DA. Moreover, there is a war raging over who owns the Dota trademark.

Dota 2 sounds like a great game with a lot of promise. What future does this bring to the original Dota Allstars? And, when the white flag has been raised, who will stand the victor?
