MatchMaking Changes by Idejder

There will be no matchmaking in HON 2.0, they are going to test moar about it first before release it

We have made some pretty significant changes to our Matchmaking interface and system in the last week and we wanted to take this time to explain them to everyone.

In our internal discussions on the new Matchmaking system before we announced 2.0 publicly, we determined that minimizing the amount of time players have to sit and wait in queue is of crucial importance. It is no fun to just look at a spinning HoN logo for an extended period of time. To alleviate this and improve the overall quality of Matchmaking, we tried to limit the number of Modes and Regions that could be excluded in the search. This accomplished the goals of speeding up queue times significantly in our simulations while giving putting everyone in the most popular modes in the regions that worked well for them. At this point we were satisfied with the average wait times and match success rate and decided to use 2 Mode downvotes and 1 Region downvote.

After the 2.0 information broke, we listened. We listened to all of the complaints and compliments. We read all of the feedback from the tl:dr-thought-out posts to the three word trolls. We listened, and all of your input made us rethink several of our decisions. We want the Matchmaking system to replace the normal game list for almost all normal play. We want it to be easier, faster, and get better results than the game list. We want to have Matchmaking be comparable to a player's ability to customize their play options in the game list.

We are willing to change our minds to accomplish this.

We talked about how to accomplish this internally without compromising a player's experience. We took our ideas and ran a lot of simulations. Based on these results and even more discussions, we have decided to let players downvote any number of options when they play with Matchmaking. If you want to play just Banning Draft game mode in just the Europe region, you are free to search for that now. The downside is that if you choose modes or regions that are not popular, the time to get into a game will be significantly longer. To reflect this, we will be showing "popularity" of all modes, maps, and regions. We will make sure to point out that if you choose anything that is not popular, you might have a very long time to wait. Barring any additional changes, this is how Matchmaking will be the first time you get to play with it.

Speaking of the first time Matchmaking is available, we want to lay out how the beginning will go. When 2.0 comes out, the Matchmaking button will be grayed out. This is because we will be doing several "focus tests" to work out any and all bugs with the system before we let it go completely open. Simulations can do a lot of work and help us significantly, but nothing replaces getting a few thousand people to just use it. We will announce and lay out times when the button will be active and will encourage everyone to queue up and play as much as possible during these times. We will gather data, fix bugs, and iterate on the algorithms before opening it up again for more testing. How many tests we need to run depends on how many people participate and how much information we get out of them. Using these tests, we can tweak the system to perfection.

We look forward to HoN 2.0 and hope you will join us for the upcoming Matchmaking tests and, as always, keep giving us feedback.

We're listening.
