Server Stability: Round 3

Summoners,

As you know, Server Stability is our number 1 priority right now. In addition to some recent hardware upgrades and new stability enhancements we have rolled out, here are two new features included in the latest patch that will help improve the quality of the experience if issues do appear.

PvP.net Ticker
The PVP.net Ticker is designed to give reliable information about the current state of the system. If the system is ever in a state out of the ordinary, you will see a message displayed in the upper left of PvP.net. This is designed to give you status about overall system health, and to let you know that we're aware of and working on any issues. It will also be great to let you know about imminent scheduled maintenance, and other actions that will impact the service. Our goal with the Ticker is to provide you with clear and reliable communication about a variety of issues that may impact your League of Legends experience.

"The Button"
I'm happy to say that now when we are experiencing severe, system wide issues, we will be able to press "The Button". This will prevent users from receiving losses or leaves because of an issue outside of their control, which we know this is very frustrating. It enables a mode that will make bad things stop happening to players. When this mode is active, the following rules will be put into place for all games in progress and starting during this mode:

  • Users will not receive a Loss or Leave from being in game or champion select.
  • Users will not be able to lose ELO.
  • Users will still receive wins, at a rate of 50% of the ELO that they are entitled to (this is to prevent ELO inflation).
  • All users will receive all of the XP and IP that they are entitled to upon game completion.
  • Stats will be recorded and saved for games, but they will not count towards any lifetime aggregates, and will be labeled as such.
We intend to use this mode when there are system wide issues that are impacting large numbers of players. To help reduce the risk of potential exploitation, we will not be broadcasting that this mode is enabled. "The Button" is to prevent players from receiving negative marks on their record when there are issues affecting them outside their control, not to allow a free for all of bad behavior.

We think that these two new features will help alleviate some of the negative experiences that are a result of unplanned downtime. Additionally, if you have any feedback or suggestions about how we can improve these features, please let us know.

We will of course continue to work diligently on improving system stability and reliability across the board, and as always we appreciate your patience as we strive to improve your experience in League of Legends.
