Why You Should Resist Vampirism Posted: 21 Sep 2010 06:11 AM PDT By: corkpod No this guide isn't about Vladimir but about the siren call of the Vampiric Scepter as a first item, and why it's bad. This is especially common among those playing ranged carries like Teemo, Ashe, and Tristana. Almost all inexperienced players using Damage oriented champions pick it up, but here's why you shouldn't. So what is a Vampiric Scepter? It's a basic item that costs 450g and gives 12% lifesteal. It is an ingredient in 6 recipes: Emblem of Valour, Executioner's Calling, Malady, The Bloodthirster, and now Wriggle's Lantern and Bilgewater Cutlass. If you play an AD champ the chances are you will be getting a Vampiric sSepter every game. Players take the vampiric scepter so they can recover health they've lost while mixing it up in the lane, the theory being that they can stay in the lane forever because they can always auto attack, and auto attack with life steal is like infinite health ... right? Later in the game they can increase the amount stolen per hit either through building the Scepter into an item with more lifesteal, or simply increasing their AD. This is good, but still not wise at the start. So why not get a Vampiric Scepter first?Auto attacking is bad. You should be last hitting creeps, not auto attacking down every wave. What is last hitting? It's hitting a creep one time to kill it, just before it would have died to other creeps. If you're just auto attacking every wave to get health back, and you're facing a competent opponent, they will let you push back to their tower, where they will continue to last hit in relative safety, while you have painted a giant "gank me" sign on your back.Ashe starts to push to regain health, but she gets too far from her turret allowing anyone to gank her with ease. Low health and bad positioning. Reason Two, its not the regeneration item you think it is. The average champ does around 50 to 60 damage per hit at level One with their auto attack. At 12% lifesteal that's around 6 or 7 health back per auto attack. Thus if anything doesn't go your way you can easily find yourself 50 auto attacks away from a respectable level of health, and a screen away from your turret because you've been pushing. Do you see a difference between the two pictures after Ashe hit a minion once? Neither do I. Grab a recommended starting item like a long sword, regrowth pendant, or Doran's item depending on your champion. Buy some health pots. For more specific guidance on the optimum start for your champ of choice, turn to an in depth guide. You will notice a difference. |

Sona, the Maven of the Strings - Champion Spotlight Posted: 21 Sep 2010 05:44 AM PDT Sona is an exceptionally potent support champion. Her main draw over other support champions is her ability to hasten her teammates' movement speed. With this advantage, Sona applies well to very mobile strategies with teams who want to out-position their enemies. Thus, she can be extremely useful with split pushes or heavily gank-oriented strategies. When playing her, I try to get the new item, Shurelya's Firecrest, for the regeneration and cooldown as well as that extra boost of movement speed on demand. My main draw is Mejai's Soulstealer, though. If you position yourself well, you shouldn't die in most fights, allowing you to stack up your Mejai's with assists. Afterwards, I find Innervating Locket and Zhonya's Ring to be very effective items. The massive ability power, huge regeneration bonuses and 40% cooldown reduction are really effective on Sona. My skill order is:
