League Of Legends

On October 2nd , Be a Part of Riot History at WCG!

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 09:13 AM PDT

Summoners,

In less than two weeks, League of Legends will be featured at the WCG Grand Finals in Los Angeles at the LA Convention Center! From September 30th through October 2nd, four teams will represent their respective regions of the world while fighting for $10,000 USD and the pride of being crowned the first League of Legends World Champion. On October 2nd, the championship matches will be decided in front of an audience of thousands and streamed live starting at 2PM PST on the League of Legends website.

The four teams are:
Counter Logic Gaming – North American Champions representing USA & Canada
SK Gaming – European Champions representing Germany & Switzerland
ChinaHero – East Asia Champions representing China
Another Story – S.E. Asian Champions representing Singapore

Of course, if you need more incentive to come by, we've got you covered. You can meet up with literal busloads of Riot devs and get brand new goodies never before seen by convention crowds! We'll be giving away four thousand tee shirts! If you meet someone on the Riot team you'll get a Riot Singed skin, which means it will also be available for purchase for the weekend in our online store!

Is that not enough? For the first time ever, Riot will have merchandise on sale, before they are available in our new online merch store. Get a sneak peek at new swag before everyone on the internet, brag as you please.
Maybe you're an artist and have some fan art to show us? Put it in our Fan Art Gallery! We'll have an entire wall dedicated to your drawings, paintings, anything you want to bring in, so make something lovely and you can win a signed poster or other cool stuff! If cosplaying is your forte, come decked out on Sunday for some special goodies and admiration from Rioterz.

Wanna grab the mic and let your rhymes flow? Think it's tricky to rock a rhyme? Time to practice in front of mirrors, just in case a freestyle nerdcore rap battle erupts where the winners get swag. Just in case.

While all of this is exciting, what could be more thrilling than… a Riot Grudge Match? Go to our forums and vote for your favorite Riot developers to go head to head on the Fields of Justice before your very eyes. Attend on Thursday and Friday and you might be conscripted to join their side in this fight of the ages.

Basically, the WCG Grand Finals are the place to be. Cheer for your home region, meet Rioterz, get our newest and finest merch, and participate in the Riot community event of the year! Tickets are only $10 a day or $25 for a 4 day pass.

Need more information on where to stay or how to get to the event? Check out our event guide or coordinate a group on the forums.

A New Champion Approaches: Sona, the Maven of the Strings

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 09:12 AM PDT

By: ByronicHero Community Manager

Lore:

Sona has no memory of her true parents. As an infant, she was found abandoned on the doorstep of an Ionian adoption house, nestled atop an ancient instrument in an exquisite case of unknown origins. She was an unusually well-behaved child, always quiet and content. Her caretakers were sure she would find a home quickly, but it soon became apparent that what they mistook for uncommon geniality was actually an inability to speak or to produce any sound whatsoever. Sona remained at the adoption house until her teens, watching in hopeless silence as prospective adopters passed her by. During this time, the caretakers sold her unusual instrument to anxious collectors, hoping to build her a trust. For a myriad of bizarre and unexpected reasons, however, it would be returned, or simply appear again outside the house.

When a wealthy Demacian woman named Lestara Buvelle learned of the instrument, she immediately embarked to Ionia. When the caretakers showcased the instrument for her, she rose wordlessly and explored the house, stopping outside Sona's room. Without hesitation, Lestara adopted her and left a generous donation for the instrument. With Lestara's guidance, Sona discovered a deep connection with the instrument which Lestara called an "etwahl." In her hands, it played tones which stilled or quivered the hearts of those around her. Within months, she was headlining with the mysterious etwahl for sold-out audiences. She played as though plucking heartstrings, effortlessly manipulating the emotions of her listeners - all without a single written note. In secret, she discovered a potent and deadly use for her etwahl, using its vibrations to slice objects from a distance. She honed this discipline in private, mastering her gift. When she felt prepared, she went to the only place which could offer her a fitting recital: the League of Legends.

"Her melody moves the soul, her silence sunders the body." -Jericho Swain, after attending her concert

Abilities:

Hymn of Valor: Sona plays the Hymn of Valor, granting nearby allied champions bonus Damage and Ability Power. Additionally, casting this ability sends out bolts of sound, dealing magic damage to the nearest two enemy champions or monsters.

Aria of Perseverance: Sona plays the Aria of Perseverance, granting nearby allied champions bonus Armor and Magic Resist. Additionally, casting this ability sends out healing melodies, healing Sona and a nearby wounded ally.

Song of Celerity: Sona plays the Song of Celerity, granting nearby allied champions bonus Movement Speed. Additionally, casting this ability energizes nearby allies with a burst of speed.

Crescendo (Ultimate): Sona plays her ultimate chord, forcing enemy champions to dance, taking magic damage over time.

Power Chord: After casting 3 spells, Sona's next attack deals bonus magic damage. Additionally, Sona's Auras persist for 3 seconds after deactivating and set off a 2 second global cooldown.

A Sneak Peek at What's Coming...

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 09:12 AM PDT

Summoners!

If you're looking for a bit of insider info on what's down the road in the world of Runeterra, we're here to give you a little taste of what's to come. If you picked up the November issue of PC Gamer, this will probably mostly be a recap for you. Now remember that these are just a bit of a sneak preview. Anything that you see here is subject to change, so take it all with that proverbial grain of salt. That being said, we hope that this gives you an even better idea of some of the awesomeness that's on the horizon in Valoran.

Inside the Magma Chamber!

If there's one thing that we've learned about Runeterrans, it's that they're huge cartography enthusiasts. We get more requests for maps than we do just about anything else in League of Legends. So, without further ado, allow me to give you a sneak peek at an upcoming Field of Justice that we're calling: The Magma Chamber.

Deep within the obsidian mountain from which the Institute of War is sculpted lies the League's most intense Field of Justice to date – the Magma Chamber. Before the time of the League, the Chamber was the heart of a powerful, but now dormant, volcano. Ancient magma flows cut out a gigantic cavernous room that the League has reshaped for its own purposes. This battle arena was built specifically to address the increasing number of disputes between Demacia and Noxus. It is one of the largest Fields of Justice found anywhere on Valoran. To that end, teleporting platforms provide champions with the ability to rapidly relocate to strategic points in the arena. The magic-infused stone and cooled magma that dominates the structure of the arena will force champions to work together more closely in pushing toward the enemy's nexus. It will be harder for a champion to rely on their summoner to traverse hazards and obstacles. The League is preparing this Field of Justice to be the premier arena for its use; as such, a slew of new monsters and minions await champions in what will surely be their greatest challenge yet.

A Shiny New Look

Anybody who has ever dropped a penny into a glass of cola knows that things are just nicer when they're shiny. And that's why, here at Riot Games, we have a Team Shiny that's been hard at work making sure that you get the most out of your League of Legends aesthetics. Over the last few months, we've been working to integrate some new graphics technology into the League of Legends engine. This will allow us to have flashier spell and lighting effects, clearer looking terrain, and, well, just a better looking League of Legends experience in general. While there's still quite a bit of work to be done, Gragas and Mordekaiser wanted to drop in to give you a little taste of what you've got to look forward to if you ran into them on Summoner's Rift in the middle of winter.

Runeterra World Tour

If you've ever wondered life is like for the average resident of Valoran, but you've never gone window shopping in Bandle City or barhopping along the docks of Bilgewater, then you'll be pleased to know that we're here to give you the grand tour. If you're looking for a bit of local color, here's some environment art detailing some of our most prominent city-states. Whether you fancy yourself a ruthless Noxian General or an enlightened Ionian Scholar, it never hurts to have an idea of what you might see when you're have a look out the window. Here's a bit of geographical perspective.

A Fond Farewell

And remember, if that super important feature that you've been anticipating didn't make it onto this list, that doesn't mean that we aren't working on it. We have a whole lot of teams here at Riot developing a whole lot of different technology here at Riot. This is just the tip of the iceberg! There are a host of new features in development, and these just happened to be the ones we were ready to showcase at this time. If you're waiting on something big, stay tuned!

Summoners!

The first annual Game Developers Choice Online Awards are getting into full swing, and we here at Riot Games are pleased to announced that we are being considered for a number of awards. Of their eight award categories, League of Legends is being considered for five, including: Best Online Game Design, Best Online Visual Arts, Best Online Technology, Best New Online Game, and Best Live Game.

In addition to these industry awards, however, GDC Online has also invited the players to vote on their favorite online title in the Choice Online Audience Award. And while we're extremely excited to have the opportunity to be recognized by our critics and peers, we're even more excited to see who you will choose as your favorite online game.

Now, we'd be pretty ecstatic if you were to choose League of Legends for the Choice Online Audience Award. So ecstatic in fact, that we would call that cause for celebration. And we think that all of the champions of the League of Legends would probably want to celebrate with us. To that end, we've decided that if we win the GDC Online Choice Online Audience Award, we will be giving all of you a free four win IP boost and making all the champions of the League of Legends free to play for a weekend. If you're looking to spend a little quality time with somebody new, but aren't yet ready to commit, this is your golden opportunity to play the field - and pick up some free IP to boot! The poll closes on September 24th, with the winners being announced on the October 7th. This would make your free-to-play weekend starting October 9th!

Here's how to vote:

  • Point your browser to the GDC Online website.
  • Fill out the form by entering your email address along with League of Legends as your choice for the Choice Online Audience Award.

Summoners,

The North American Championship has been decided! Counter Logic Gaming emerges victorious after a furious two hour battle. After inheriting a one game advantage due to their status as upper bracket champions, Counter Logic Gaming defeated HawkshotGG 2-1 in a match that was viewed by tens of thousands and reached a peak at 17,000 concurrent viewers.
